Thankful Tuesdays: A simple seventh

We celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary yesterday. It was just one of those usual days, just made a little extra special, with lovely flowers from the hubby...

... and a home-cooked dinner (the kids were sick so we decided to eat at home).

We had bak ku teh, as well as honey roast ribs
(which Junior J loved, something rare since he isn't fond of meat!).
"Life is made up, not of great sacrifices or duties, but of little things, in which smiles and kindness, and small obligations given habitually, are what preserve the heart and secure comfort."
- Humphry Davy

So I am thankful. For the hubby. And those seven years of little things, and small acts of love.

What are you thankful for this week?

Little Learning: Exploring Snowflake Bentley

When I was younger, I wanted to be an interior designer. I memorized the prices of furniture off the Ikea catalogues. I drew up all sorts of plans for my bedroom. I saved up, and bought issues of "Home and Decor" to pour over their glossy spreads. I borrowed books from the library, and read about how to hang your picture frames and how to DIY your own furniture. I even took part in Ikea's design your bedroom contest, and was over the moon on being able to choose furniture to place in the store's display.

But when it came to choosing universities and courses after my A levels, I followed my parents' advice. Which was to choose something more mainstream. And perhaps after I had earned my university degree, I could dabble in design if I was still interested. At least this way, I had a degree to fall back on. In the end, I became a teacher, and I got my design fix by making pretty powerpoints and designing the covers of the students' learning materials. In retrospect, I didn't regret going into teaching, and probably didn't have the flair to hold my own in the interior design industry. However, I do still hold great admiration for those who find and pursue their passions, and are not afraid to take the path less trodden.

Which brings me to this book on Wilson Bentley. In a farming community, this man chose to be different, and dedicated his life to celebrating and capturing beauty around him:
"The average dairy farmer gets up at dawn because he has to go to work in the cow yard. I get up at dawn, too. But it is because I want to find some leaf, hung with dew; or a spider web which the dew has made into the most delicate rope of pearls... I take my camera with me, get down on my knees in the wet grass, and photograph these exquisite bits of nature. Because I do this I can show these lovely things to people who never would have seen them without my help. They will get their daily quart of milk, all right. Other farmers will attend to that. But I think I am giving them something which is just as important." - W.A. Bentley.

Junior J and I enjoyed reading this book on the life of Bentley, and how he managed to figure out, through an arduous process of trial and error, the way to capture photographs of snowflakes. As a parent, it was also heartwarming to see how Bentley's parents dared to believe in his dream, investing their savings in the camera that helped him to photograph those delicate crystals.

Aside from enjoying the book, I printed pictures (taken by Wilson Bentley) off the official Snowflake Bentley website, and got the boy to match them. We had an interesting time, looking at the details of these snowflakes, and I've uploaded our printable here. Also, I made him some count and clip cards for him to work on counting snowflakes from 11 to 25 (get our free printable here).

Ok, gotta run. Here's to a blessed week!

How to keep your baby occupied for 20 minutes #5

If you have bento tools, try giving some to baby to mess around with. The rice molds are great for them to try matching shapes!

Thankful Tuesdays: Friends that go beyond

Before we moved over to Germany, the hubby did a recce trip to find out more about the place... and along the way, he made friends with one of his current colleagues. This colleague, T, went out of his way to help him feel at home, even bringing him out for a meal during his visit.

When we were in the process of preparing to move over, we had lots of problems trying to find a suitable place to stay, since we couldn't view apartments and couldn't really speak the language. T's wife (then pregnant), actually went house hunting for us, and helped us to rent our current place. They also helped us to book a taxi from the airport, and even loaned us cutlery and plates, some furniture, and got us settled into our place.

Recently, we had to battle all the mold problems in our home, as well as our rather unreasonable landlord. T roped in his friend, who was a former painter, and helped us to get the walls treated for mold. Since the walls needed to be painted, he offered to help us get it settled while we were away, so that the boys would not need to be exposed to the paint fumes. So while we were enjoying the sunshine in Venice, he was hard at work helping us to paint our place in the evenings.

All this coming from a person the hubby didn't even know before his recce trip! We are really thankful and blessed to have such friends. It's been quite an eventful year staying in a foreign land, but such friends really make such a difference!

Have any friends made a difference in your life? What are you thankful for this week?

Weekend Wanderings: Venice

We spent the week after the hubby's conference in Venice. The boys were still sick, but we thought that the warmer weather down south would help with recovery. Venice was beautiful, all serene and classy sitting on the water, and I think the boys enjoyed the boat rides.

It was nice, walking about, feeling spring in the air and the sun warm on our backs.

We're back home though, and back to freezing weather. Thing is, we came home to find that our central heating and hot water supply has kaput (we're not sure if it was because our friend accidentally turned off one of the radiators)! We're praying that its a minor repair and that the radiators don't have to be replaced. This old place we're renting seems to be never short of problems, and I admit we're really looking forward to going home to SG! Oh well, praying hard, and hoping the problem gets fixed soon since the house is coooooold! Brrr.

Thankful Tuesdays: Still thankful

We've been on the road as hubby had to attend a conference across the weekend. Unfortunately, the boys have fallen sick, so we've been stuck in the apartment, hiding from the sub-zero temperatures. They have been feverish and coughing, and we had every intent to head back home. However, our home back in Germany is undergoing painting, so we decided to continue with the second leg of our trip, with the hopes that the warmer weather would help in the boys' recovery.

In the midst of dealing with puke (with no washing machine!), cranky kids and runny noses, I tried to take time to count those blessings, and found that there was plenty to be thankful for:

:: That my mum is currently visiting. We do get on each others' nerves very often, but she's been a great help, lending a hand with the washing and cooking and helping us with the kids. It helps to have an extra pair of hands since I'm also down with a cold.

:: We managed to spend a day exploring the Neuschwanstein castle before they fell sick.

:: For a place to stay and hide from the cold weather. And mountain views that remind me of how great God is.

:: For meds that help the fever & sniffles, and stuff to keep the kids occupied while coped up at home...

What are you thankful for?
